Bulgaria is an industrially-agrarian country. The share in a total internal product is: industry and building — 46,6%, agriculture — 12%. The booty of brown coal, which makes approximately 30,8 millions tones, engineering (production of electro-telphers and electric vehicles, tractors, agricultural machines, computers, machine tools) and food industry (tobacco, fruit can food) are the most developed in industry. Black and coloured metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical, woodworking industry similarly play an important role in the economy of Bulgaria. Plant-growing prevails in agriculture. Manufacture of grain and leguminous (6,3 mil. m.t. in 1997, mainly wheat, corn), tobacco, vegetables, fruit, grapes, efiroil cultures (the 1st place in the world in manufacturing and export of pink rose oil). Meat-woolen animal industries (large horned livestock, sheeps, pigs) is developed. Fishery. Length (1996 thousand kms) railways 6,5, motorways 37,3. Navigation across Danube. The basic ports: Ruse, Varna, Burgas. Sea ferry communication Varna — Ilyichevsk (Ukraine). Resorts of the international value Gold Sand, Albena, Solar Coast. Export: machine-building, electrotechnical, chemical production, plastic, vegetables, fruit, wine, tobacco products. About ½ foreign trade turnover is the turnover of Western European countries.
